Moon Valley Nurseries – Surprise Arizona

I have never had a lot interest in this nursery.  Perhaps because the main focus has been large plants for landscapers.  They are not as diverse as Summer Winds, or for that matter as Saguaro Country Nursery.   You could go once to this nursery and pretty much be done with them for a life time.   They sell a few smaller plants, but not much to make it worth while to visit just for selection of plants for a few .

But that is far from the complaints I have.   Back when my land lord replaced two trees that were killed off by the winter with live oak.  When they came over to plant the tree one of the experts that came over choose to ignore me when I had questions about the trees.  Keep in mind it was based on my suggestion that the land lord get the trees.  Keep in mind he knew I was a renter,a long term renter.    As he played happy with my land lord, he pretty much treated me like I was not there.   When I asked about the watering and such he pretty much ignored me.  He ignored me when I asked for a card.   This was 4 years ago.

The attitude has not changed much.  When I went there my goal was to find (hopefully) organic, drought resistant, and native.    While I found no organic I did find a few natives and lots of plants that qualify as drought resistant.    My problem was when I decided to ask one of the workers there pricing.  He dumped his Hostess cake and drink in one of the pots, and tried to tell me that the price should be around the plant.  When he looked around the pot he and did not find the price he abandoned me to pick up his Hostess cake and drink and went off.  No help, no advice on who to ask, and no call for someone that could answer my question.   The staff pasted me by without so much as a word.   After walking around to examine the plants I decided to ask for a business card, I guess it was the camera that made them nervous, I don’t know.  But it took a moment for the guy to get me the card of his manager.  I think what struck me most was there was a lot of people around the counter that worked for this nursery.  Not something I see at most nurseries.

Granted service was not great, but there were native plants.  One of which I have not seen at most stores such as Iron Wood.  But some of the other plants are cheaper at Summer Wind such as the fig (and their member ship plan does not give you a discount on an overly inflated price).

Perhaps its the fact that I dress like a skater and I tend to keep my hair long, and I just don’t seem worth the try to get me buy.  But if you plan to buy from this nursery, make sure that you sign up for the VIP program.   Currently they are running a crazy special where you can get up to half off the trees.   Seriously trees that were $399, only to cost $199.   Make sure to sign up at:

  1. I’m sorry you were treated rudely. At Walmart, that would not happen, especially at the Rosedale Walmart in Bakersfield, CA. The service that gave you was below par.
